After 9 years – my first full length record. It took so long because of money. This started with my friend Peter Stafford and I saying let’s just a record a few acoustic songs. Then I wrote one for Jon Dee Graham and his son, and he said he’d like to play on it. Holy shit! Then I asked Don Harvey if he wanted to play drums. Then Redd Volkaert, Warren Hood, and Cindy Cashdollar all said they would come play on it. Cindy was so enthusiastic it kind of made my head spin. Eventually we conceded that what we had was a record.
Peter did a great job, though I can’t say I knew what I was doing as far as producing. We did the best we could with what we had, and Peter and Seth bent waaaaaay the fuck over backwards to help make it work. I still can’t thank them enough. My ex-publishers helped out with the financing and we were able to get it done.
I felt it was the first time all my songs were really stories about people other than me, and it was a breakthrough in that way. When I die, I hope my songs outlast me. Hopefully a few of these will be there. It’s not always easy to get the word out there in the timely fashion you would like. You just do what you can.
I guess I graduated from teen dramas to adult shows. “Empty Arms” got tiny spots in “Criminal Minds” and another CBS show that aired in Europe (“Threshold”). “Love In Your Heart” ended up in the “Harper’s Island” miniseries and a Lifetime movie, and “Something To Lose” got a spot in a short lived Lifetime series, “Monarch Cove”.
